We all need a good pair of snips, ones that can live in pockets without doing any harm, and wander round the garden with us for those unplanned moments - and these ones are great. Handy to have a couple of pairs really, as they are absolutely brilliant for flowers, fruit and veg, but aren’t nearly as tough as secateurs, obviously, and are for green growth only, not woody pruning. Slender blades get right in for careful snipping, red white handles show up when you (almost inevitably) leave them lying around somewhere.

Most of our sharp tools are made from carbon steel - this means they will, through regular use, stain (and eventually rust) and gradually lose their edge. Caring for them involves three things…

  1. Correct Use:
The Japanese steel used in our Garden Snips is known for its high hardness and sharpness, but it may also be more prone to chipping if not handled properly. Avoid cutting wire, metal, stone, or any other hard materials with these snips, as well as twisting or applying uneven pressure. When cutting branches, make sure to cut diagonally along the fibers rather than straight across. Be mindful of the maximum cut dimensions and avoid using these snips for heavy-duty cutting. For heavier cuts, use the base of the blades rather than the tips.
  1. Keeping Them Clean:

Eliminate leaf resin, rust and gunk from your gardening tools using a CreanMate and water. Afterwards, give them a gentle wipe with Camellia oil and store them in a cool, dry location.
  1. Keeping Them Sharp:

As an expert in the gardening industry, it's important to note that even though our Niwaki Garden Snips require little sharpening at first, over time their sharpness may diminish, particularly when used for box clipping. To maintain a high-quality finish, we recommend using our Niwaki Sharpening Stones, with the #1000 grit being optimal for general sharpening purposes.

Maintain the sharpness of your Secateurs by regularly sharpening them every few weeks. For even better results, sharpen your Shears and Topiary Clippers EVERY time they are used. You will notice a significant improvement in their performance.
